On Wednesday, 3 June 2020, the Opening Ceremony of the China-Italy Lab & Academy on Advanced Manufacturing (CI-LAM) was held in the presence of our Italian Minister for University and Research, Gaetano Manfredi, and the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, Wang Zhigang.
The CI-LAM is a bilateral platform established in 2017 for promoting research and development in the field of advanced manufacturing between Italy and China.
Through the Lab, researchers, students, and working groups from partner universities carry out joint research activities supporting operators in the innovation ecosystem of the manufacturing sector in both countries. Additionally, the CI-LAM promotes training, exchange, and mobility programmes for students, academics, and professionals.
The cooperation platform is promoted by the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Bergamo, Tsinghua University, Campania NewSteel, and the China Sci-Tech Automation Alliance in collaboration with SPICI.
Thanks to the activities carried out over the years, the CI-LAM has been recognised as the main strategic bilateral platform on advanced manufacturing within the “Action Plan towards 2025 on Scientific and Technological Collaboration between Italy and China” drafted by the Directorate General for the Country System of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Following the success of the Summer School launched last year in Naples, the CI-LAM Academy has been inaugurated. The original training programme has been digitised and expanded. This year, the training, innovation, and matchmaking activities will take place online with a particular focus on topics related to Industry 4.0 (Advanced Manufacturing Systems, Energy, Predictive Maintenance, Artificial Intelligence and Big Data, Robotics, Cybersecurity, DC Grid System, and 5G).
In particular, the CI-LAM Academy includes a series of webinars on innovation for professionals, researchers, managers, and academics, and the second edition of the CI-LAM Summer School aimed at students, graduates, and Ph.D. candidates with the goal of providing the state of the art and future research directions on key technologies in advanced manufacturing.
In their speeches, Minister Manfredi and Minister Wang reiterated the importance of technological and scientific cooperation, especially during this period of global health crisis, also recalling initiatives carried out over the years between Italy and China, such as the Best Startup Showcase, the Science, Technology and Innovation Week, and the most recent solidarity campaign “China Our Hearts Beat For You” signed by 3,000 professionals and representatives from the Italian research community.
Approximately 500 representatives from the academic and industrial world of the two countries participated in the opening ceremony, and the following guests intervened: the Minister for University and Research, Gaetano Manfredi, the Chinese Minister of Science and Technology, Wang Zhigang, the Plenipotentiary Minister Fabrizio Nicoletti, Central Director for Innovation and Research of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Italy, Li Junhua, the Rector of the University of Naples Federico II, Prof. Arturo De Vivo, the Rector of the University of Bergamo, Prof. Remo Morzenti Pellegrini, the Vice President of Tsinghua University, Yang Bin, the President of the China Sci-Tech Automation Alliance, Jason Wang, the President of Campania NewSteel, Prof. Giorgio Ventre, Prof. Giovanni Breglio from the University of Naples Federico II, the Deputy Rector for Technology Transfer, Innovation and Research Valorisation of the University of Bergamo, Prof. Sergio Cavalieri, the Vice President of Campania NewSteel and President of SPICI, Vincenzo Lipardi.
