VETEREA - A digital twin for Altera Capua

On Wednesday, 18th December, the project "Veterea" was presented to the city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere, at the beautiful Sala San Bonaventura of the MUCIR (Civic and Risorgimento Museum), an innovative solution with the ambition to create a digital twin of the ancient city.

The project, funded through the PNRR funds within the i-NEST ecosystem, is coordinated by Spici Srl - Società per l'Innovazione, la Cooperazione e l'Internazionalizzazione, in partnership with the Centro Interdipartimentale di Ricerca “Alberto Calza Bini” of the University of Naples Federico II, and in collaboration with the Municipality of Santa Maria Capua Vetere.

The main objective of “Veterea” is the valuation and enjoyment of the city's vast archaeological heritage, both visible and invisible. Through innovative digital solutions, "Veterea-a digital twin for Altera Capua" aims to unveil the fascinating underground world of the city, which boasts over 400 archaeological sites, making it accessible to all citizens and visitors.

Technology and Inclusivity: the pillars of "Veterea"

The project's vision aims to make Santa Maria Capua Vetere a model of cultural accessibility through digital technologies. "Veterea" is distinguished by:

  • Inclusive enjoyment solutions and the adoption of a design for all approach;

  • Utilisation of advanced technologies such as interactive maps, geolocation apps for visitors, digital twins, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, which will allow the creation of an interactive digital model of the ancient city.

  • The possibility to virtually explore archaeological areas that are currently inaccessible, offering an immersive and interactive experience that connects past and present.

The event saw the participation of the civic population, who had the opportunity to discover some previews of the project, diving into the extraordinary potential of this initiative and who will be involved later, also during the design phase.

“Veterea,” thanks to the collaboration between Spici, the University Federico II, and the local administration, represents an extraordinary opportunity to position Santa Maria Capua Vetere, candidate for Italian Capital of Culture 2027, as a reference point for using technology in the service of culture, modernising the management of archaeological heritage and promoting widespread and inclusive knowledge of the past.
