VETEREA

VETEREA was born to reconstruct the archaeological identity of ancient Capua Vetere, now buried beneath the modern city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere. Through the most advanced digital technologies — 3D surveys, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence models — the project creates a digital twin that overlays the submerged archaeological sites onto the contemporary urban fabric, connecting past and present and allowing exploration of what is no longer visible.
The hidden heritage thus becomes accessible, interactive, and immersive, opening new perspectives for cultural enhancement, urban planning, and experiential tourism.
A bridge between history and innovation, where technology restores life, form, and memory to the forgotten city.

Through the digital twin, it is possible to virtually explore places that are currently inaccessible, view historical reconstructions, and interact with dynamic three-dimensional models, which can also be enjoyed in augmented reality, both overlaid on the actual site and via image-based marker systems.
Artificial intelligence supports the visit by intelligently suggesting optimal routes to reach and learn about the various archaeological sites.
The system also integrates data analysis tools to monitor the flows, preferences, and behaviours of visitors, providing the municipality with useful information for planning and enhancing the cultural heritage.

Put the digital twin to the test

With VETEREA, the city of Santa Maria Capua Vetere becomes a laboratory of cultural innovation, where archaeology and technology interact to create new experiences in knowledge and tourism.
The project represents a replicable model for other cities with buried or distributed heritage, paving the way for a new way to enhance historical memory through digital tools.
A bridge between past and future, where the physical and digital realities meet to bring new life to history.
